“Thank you for your kindness and your trouble,” replied the ghost,

and disappeared like a snuffed-out flame.

Fearless Jean ~ Henri Pourrat

Chapter 9

Jeni heaved a huge sigh of relief as she stepped out of the museum, bending over with her hands braced on her thighs.

“You okay?” Ice asked, resting a hand on her back. His voice sounded strained. “Come on, there’s a bench across the street.”

Sucking in a breath, Jeni straightened, blinking against the sunshine that had finally blazed its way through the clouds. She trailed Ice as he crossed the street, and then plunked down on the wooden slatted seat, drained. “God, that was excruciatingly stressful.”

“Agreed,” Ice said. “I hope it’s worth it.”

“It will be.” Jeni injected more confidence than she felt. “If I can find out who my ancestors are and the nature of my ability, I might actually have a chance to control this link, or whatever it is, to the spirit world. Avoiding any more accidents would definitely make all of this worthwhile.”

Ice didn’t respond, slumping against the back of the bench.

Feeling as if her hands were steady enough, Jeni took the ring from her pocket to examine it up close. “I couldn’t tell in my mom’s picture what else was on here besides the cross. It looks like another cross, except it’s long and skinny.” She held the ring in front of Ice.

After a moment, he said, “I bet it’s a sword.”

“A sword?” Jeni frowned.

“Sure. People have been going to war over religion for centuries.”

“Oh, yeah, I see your point. It seems odd that this belonged to a woman.” Wearing the ring seemed like the best way to not lose it, so Jeni attempted to slip it onto her ring finger. The gold band stopped at her knuckle. “Wow, it’s really small.” The metal felt oddly cool, despite handling it, and she shivered as she pushed the ring onto her pinky finger.

“Everything was smaller three hundred years ago,” Ice said, eyeballing the ring.

“I’d like to go over to Phoebe’s shop and ask her about using this,” Jeni said. “I hope Tyler won’t make a fuss about waiting.”

“I doubt it,” Ice said. “He was pretty ticked about his niece seeing Marielle—ticked enough to run interference for you—so I imagine he’ll want you to talk to her ASAP.”

“True.” Jeni pulled her phone from her purse. “I’ll text Mandy and tell them to meet us there. That’ll be less time they’ll have to wait for us.”

Jeni and Ice were already on their feet when Mandy responded with an “OK.”

The strip of sleigh bells on the door jingled merrily as they entered Memories and Magic. The store appeared empty, but seconds later, Phoebe swept through the curtains of the back room. “Hey, Jeni. Hey, Ice. How are things with your ghost?”

“Hopefully better,” Jeni said. “She told us where to find the ring that tethers her here.” She lifted her hand and wiggled her pinky.

Phoebe’s brows arched and a hint of suspicion shone in her eyes as she met Jeni’s gaze.
